Luke Springman

Luke Springman obtained his bachelor’s degrees in German and Russian at IndianaUniversity in Bloomington, Indiana, USA. During his time as an undergraduate, he studied for one year at the University of Hamburg in Germany. Before continuing with graduate studies, Springman took a year’s hiatus and worked in residential construction, primarily as a carpenter. He then attended Ohio State University, where he earned his master’s and doctoral degrees in German Literature. A Fulbright fellowship funded his dissertation research for a year at the Institut für Jugendbuchforschung (Institute for Research on Juvenile Literature) at the University of Frankfurt in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Since 1992 he has been a full-time faculty member in the Department of Languages and Cultures at Bloomsburg University in the state of Pennsylvania, USA and is currently Professor of German there. Springman’s teaching responsibilities lie primarily in German language, literature, and cultural history. He holds a strong interest in pedagogy and has taught a course in teaching methodologies. For the term 2013 to 2015 he has been appointed to serve full-time as Director of Global Education at Bloomsburg University, responsible for the administration of study abroad programs and faculty exchanges. Research and publications have been mainly in the area of German youth culture during the Weimar Republic (1918-1933). His current project deals withAfrica in Weimar popular literature and film. Springman is an avid scuba diver andas a certified scuba diving instructor teaches classes in the sport at Bloomsburg University. He also enjoys woodworking and is an inveterate do-it-yourselfer.
